Background of the Study
Cooperative societies have long been regarded as a viable strategy for addressing poverty and promoting economic development, particularly in rural areas of Nigeria. In Mangu Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State, cooperative societies have the potential to enhance collective economic activities, improve access to resources, and support local entrepreneurs. However, despite their proven benefits, many residents remain unaware of the existence and advantages of these cooperatives. Development communication plays an essential role in informing and educating communities about the value of cooperatives and encouraging their participation. Through targeted communication strategies such as community meetings, media campaigns, and information dissemination, development communication can foster understanding, trust, and participation in cooperative societies. This study aims to explore how development communication can encourage the establishment and growth of cooperative societies in Mangu LGA, thereby improving local economic outcomes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Cooperative societies in Mangu LGA have the potential to promote social and economic empowerment, but their full potential is not being realized due to low levels of awareness and participation. Many community members are either unaware of the benefits of cooperatives or are reluctant to join due to a lack of understanding of their operations and potential impact. Despite the availability of programs and policies to promote cooperatives, there is a gap in effectively communicating these opportunities to the community. Development communication strategies must address this gap by raising awareness, educating local residents on the benefits of cooperatives, and encouraging active participation. This study aims to examine the role of development communication in promoting cooperative societies in Mangu LGA and assess the effectiveness of these strategies in fostering cooperative development.

This study will focus specifically on Mangu LGA in Plateau State and examine communication strategies aimed at encouraging participation in cooperative societies. The study may be limited by the availability of data, particularly if there is limited documentation of existing cooperative programs in the region, and by challenges in measuring the direct impact of communication strategies on cooperative participation.
